Miners preserve the Dash blockchain’s transaction history, while preventing double spending. This layer is powered by miners who compete to create new blocks and secure the blockchain. The Dash team now keeps users updated on changes through its website and Reddit forum.įor those familiar with any proof-of-work cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin or Litecoin), the first tier of the Dash blockchain operates in much the same way. ![]() Today, Dash is even partly run through a series of contracts on its blockchain that help manage the development, marketing and infrastructure of the software. The first time I booted the machine up, I immediately turned the volume down because it was shockingly powerful. The sound on each game is about as full and immersive as you can imagine for a home arcade machine. ![]() Its dual speakers may be the most impressive part of the machine’s hardware. That doesn’t matter much for an old-school arcade game that’s likely capped at 480p, but it’s still got enough power for crystal-clear clarity. The monitor is a 17-inch LCD screen that looks sharp and bright, which Arcade1Up claims is high definition, likely meaning it’s 720p or 1080p. It also has two white switches, with one to toggle the device on and off-no, you don’t have to listen to Pac-Man’s attract mode on loop all day-and the other to adjust the volume. The joystick has a metal stem and a screw-on red ball cap, while the buttons are faithful to the original Pac-Man arcade machine, with white, red, and yellow buttons. And yes, this cabinet also supports two players in case you want to game with a friend. The movement is excellent and the buttons are responsive, without much delay between gameplay and input. The joystick is easy to move and feels faithful to a real arcade machine, and, thankfully, doesn’t feel laggy or grossly sticky like you’d find at a movie theater or local laundry. Responsive Controls, Terrific Screen, Incredible SoundĮvery game on the Arcade1Up Pac-Man Deluxe machine relies on a single button or the machine’s joystick controller to play-as far as skill is concerned, they all feel simple enough to master. You can also start chats with other users if you want to challenge them to beat your score. The brand also has a companion app in which you can keep tabs on the newest cabinets from Arcade1Up, plus add other Arcade1Up members. I definitely don’t come close to anyone in the top 20 for a single game on my Deluxe Pac-Man cabinet, but it’s still an excellent feature. You can see where you rank between the sea of other players within the nation for any game on your cabinet. One unique feature of Arcade1Up machines is the inclusion of Wi-Fi-enabled leaderboards, which adds a layer of competition between other owners. But Arcade1Up seems to have perfected the home arcade cabinet. In any case, it’s tough to imagine an arcade machine would fit in most living spaces, especially for those who live in an apartment like mine. The brand’s Deluxe series introduced larger sizes to its lineup, more faithful to the traditional arcade cabinet in size and appearance. Most of Arcade1Up’s machines are a three-fourths scale of a full-sized arcade cabinet, hovering around 4 feet and requiring a stool or squat to play. ![]() It’s a simple project for two people at most, and is certainly user-friendly. Yell0w caps smartly cover the screws, so all metal parts are hidden, and many pieces slot into each other snugly. For the most part, the instructions were easy to follow-they would read better if the assembly illustrations labeled which panel has printed artwork on it-but it didn’t feel frustrating. ![]() It took me about three hours to assemble the cabinet, shuffling wooden parts around, screwing in pieces I held up with my legs, and using nothing more than a screwdriver. I called in a sample of the Arcade1Up Pac-Man Deluxe arcade machine, unpacked and built it, and then play-tested it for one month to see if it would give me Pac-Man fever or just a short-lived nostalgia trip. For the consumer who’s always wanted to put an arcade machine in their home, that’s a pretty respectable price. The Arcade1Up Pac-Man Deluxe arcade game has 14 games in one 5-foot-tall cabinet, complete with a light-up marquee, a faux coin slot, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi leaderboards, and replicated cabinet art, all for $499. That’s probably why Arcade1Up, a hardware company that specializes in producing arcade games with modern components for home use, chose the title for its mainline Deluxe series of arcade cabinets. A hit since its 1980 debut, it’s nearly synonymous with arcades-its iconography is as recognizable as Super Mario, and its play objective is so accessible a toddler could play it. Only a few generations of gamers understand what hitting a local arcade may feel like, but even the most casual players have played at least one game of Pac-Man. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the solar system is small enough that you could conceivably touch down on every planet in a single 22-minute run, you are smaller and insignificant by comparison. “That lack of understanding makes every run, from blasting off for the first time to exploring a previously hidden place, both exciting and a bit terrifying. The simple premise gives way to the interesting story (stories, really) you uncover in your travels: The Nomai, like Metroid’s Chozo, Mass Effect’s Protheans, or any of a handful forerunner races seem unknowable at first glance, but as you become acquainted with them through diaries and other notes they feel both distant – they are dead, after all – but relatable. That process leads to a long, convoluted puzzle which you solve by exploring each of the system’s five planets, along with a handful of moons and other points of interest. Before too long, you figure out that you are trapped in a surprisingly helpful Groundhog Day- (or Majora’s Mask)-style time loop, so it is up to you to figure out how to break out of it. By turning lore into puzzle elements into progress, into the meat of the experience rather than the dressing, it elevates the process of learning about these worlds to heights rarely seen in games. You control an alien astronaut/anthropologist exploring your own solar system to uncover and unravel the mysteries of the Nomai, a mysterious and ancient race whose ruins lie scattered across every planet. That’s a problem that Outer Wilds, a space-exploration sim laced with puzzles and a mystery story, sidesteps by putting the storytelling that normally litters the background of games front and center. Countless worlds smother us with lore and histories, giving us the opportunity to understand them better if we choose to stop and smell the roses, but that understanding is usually optional, and often feels superficial as a result. The rest of our guides will walk you through every planet and location in the order they made sense to us - including a trip to the strange comet, The Interloper - but your journey doesn’t have to follow the exact same path. We’ll start on Timber Hearth’s moon, the Attlerock, and follow the clues from there to the game’s other planets, like Brittle Hollow and Giant’s Deep. ![]() Our guides will walk you through every step of the way, using the clues you gather at each location to point your way to the next. ![]() They’ll point in several directions, and it might get hard to keep track of where you’re supposed to go next. It won’t take long until, like any good mystery, you have a lot of pieces of information to sort through. Your job is to piece together information from various ruins left behind by a long-dead civilization all across the solar system. And not too long after that, the sun explodes and everything resets. You have access to an entire solar system right from the start. Our Outer Wilds beginner’s guide will get you started. It’s a purposefully obtuse game that rewards curiosity. It just doesn’t tell you why you’re exploring, what the mystery is, or even that there is a mystery.
